Moon Shadow

Moon Shadow

The last total lunar eclipse which took place on June 15th, 2011 was a relatively rare central lunar eclipse, in which the center point of Earth’s shadow passed across the Moon. That night I was working very late at the studio and was privy to this delightful view. After the event, unable to sleep, I returned to work and picked up a Cat Steven’s CD. The first song that came out was “Moon Shadow”. That made me laugh. I took that as a good omen and began creating the dark symbolic marks with a palette knife on both the printmaking and rice paper. I shifted to a paintbrush and as I played along with the melody I began creating the playful lines in the center of the piece imagining the different phases of the moon and influenced by that rare eclipse.
