African Petroglyph Art

These artworks are inspired by the petroglyphs found in South Africa’s Drakensberg and Cedarberg Mountains. People in these remote lands have created art since time immemorial: some of these cave paintings may be 3,000 years old. The ancient peoples of this land created works that are suffused with symbolism that goes far deeper than their surface depictions of animals and people. The audience for these paintings is encouraged to interpret and imagine their own mythology to accompany the symbols.

Cave Art of the Bushmen of the San, the Khoi Khoi and the People of the Eland

The Bushman of the San created petroglyphs that may represent religious beliefs as well as the spirits of the dead, the people of the early race, shamanic rituals, and the important role of women in their society. The Khoi Khoi left handprints and dots upon the stone. The People of the Eland also made their mark upon the cave and canyon walls, depicting hunts in the wild. They have left behind painted symbols whose meaning can only be dimly interpreted through the passage of the ages.
